It all started with a hike up to Pike's Peak in Northeast Iowa on a chilly New Year's Day (see the photo above of the author and her muse). It was such a remarkable experience witnessing a bear-shaped Effigy Mounds that the story of Camp Effigy started brewing. No spoilers, but Effigy Mounds play a huge role in this book and definitely deserve an in-person visit if you ever get the chance.
